 George Washington Born 1732<br />
The plaque at the base of this statue in Peoria states that this is a replica of the statue which stands on the campus of The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. It says, "May this likeness inspire all who pass by to honor the contributions and ideals of its subject." In 1792, during the presidency of George Washington, the federal government negotiated the Putnam treaty of peace and friendship with the Native American tribes living in the Illinois and Wabash river valleys. Two representatives from Peoria then traveled east with a delegation to deliver the treaty papers to President Washington. One representative was Gomo, a Potawatomi leader who had been raised in the Old Village of Peoria by a French fur trader and farmer. The other was Jean Baptiste Maillet, a French trader and founder of the New Village of Peoria.<br />

The statue was given by alumni and friends of The George Washington University in April 1998.

  • March 8, Korean War Memorial near the reflecting pool. While not as well publicized as the Vietnam Memorial it is every bit as beautiful and emotional. Images of the fallen look on as their comrade move by in statue form.
  • March 6, The first round of images from the Washington DC trip this week. Thursday was a beautiful day but cold. I was able to get out very early and was rewarded with having many areas to my self. It was great fun shooting and a fabulous opportunity to take Washington's beauty.
  • February 12th, Lincoln's Birthday...John McClarey, an internationally known Lincoln sculptor from Decatur, Illinois, was commissioned to create this exceptional bronze statue called Lincoln Draws the Line, to commemorate one of Lincoln's most powerful speeches on his opposition to the expansion of slavery, given on October 16, 1854 on the grounds of the Peoria courthouse. On October 14, 2001, this statue was placed near the actual location of the speech.

  • February 24, This is the headline from October 7, 1899: "DEDICATES PEORIA MONUMENT.; The President Addresses Thousands at the Unveiling of the Memorial to Civil War Veterans."<br />
(Excerpt) PEORIA, Ill., Oct. 6. -- A good part of the population of Peoria, the second city of Illinois, to-day took part in an elaborate demonstration to welcome to their city the President of the United States. The great event of the day was the unveiling of a monument erected by Peoria's citizens as a memorial to the soldiers of the rebellion, living and dead.<br />
