February 3, Whooooooa! Rider at the Rolex 3 Day in KY coming out of the saddle. I felt this angle, while unusual, really gave a sense of what it feels like to be in his shoes...mmmmm boots.

January 10th, A rider at the "Bit of Brittan" competition in Chicago. I was working to reduce shutter speeds to capture more of the energy of the shot in camera. I thought this shot was a loss because of the lack of focus on the horse but it turned out nicely with focus directed to the rider focusing on her next jump.

January 22, One of my favorite barns in the area. It was a bad lighting day so I opted for some softening in pp to shoot for a linen feel...Moderately pleased but snow on the lens gave me a few smudges I need to correct.

January 31, Well I made it through my first month on Dallies. It was harder than I though it would be but it has been a great experience so far. Thank you to all who have offered their thoughts and comments. Hearing your encouragement and seeing all the fantastic work displayed in the community has challenged and motivated me to keep plugging away.

Not my best technically but I walked up on this guy unexpectedly as he was grabbing a fish. He then took a victory lap over the river and around the river front skyline. it was very late in the afternoon and a real stretch for my Simga 50mm-500mm f 4-6.3. Only got one usable out of the string of many shots...better than nothing. Thanks again for your inspiration.

January 15th, Didn't have time to pick up the camera today so I took a look back through my archives for something I had not worked with yet. I found this little guy. He was a spectator at an air show but you would never know it from the shot...he was completely uninterested in the jets flying overhead. His world was, at that moment, under that straw hat. He put a smile on my face after a long week. I hope he does the same for you.

January 14th, "Hurricane Connor". This is Connor, one of our 3 Goldens, shaking it off after a dip.

February 1, Went to photograph eagles yesterday but there was only one. Because of the recent warm weather they have already dispersed up and down the river. That is why I was able to catch yesterday's shot of one over the city. I was inspired by Donna's comments yesterday to pull out a shot I did several weeks ago and rework it. This is a composite done in PP but all that was necessary was to eliminate some of the distance between foreground flag and the eagle. The flag is in fact at the top of the cliff side viewing area.

January 11, I love Holiday lights...and while these don't exactly say "Merry Christmas", they do say "let's celebrate something". I have always struggled for accurate color reproduction when trying to capture lighting displays but was pleased at the way this turned out. After the Monday I had today, I could also use a cold one!

February 2, A beautiful time piece that hangs in the student union of Purdue University. My wife and I glimpsed it countless times as a student trying to be on time for class without noticing its beauty. Now that my daughters pass daily under it, I have come to see it differently.

January 17, Shot Saturday evening as dark overtook the frozen Illinois River. This is a timed exposure. It was eerie taking this shot as the river groans, creeks and pops as the ice expands

January 23, Busy all weekend shooting and posting from an event my TV station held yesterday so I reached into the vault and reworked a shot of my youngest daughter Kylie with Portrait Pro.

January 16, Went hiking today to the Ice Falls in a nearby state park. The lighting was very flat but managed to get a few decent images. The orange coloring is from the high iron content in the water.

January 9, It was -11 degrees Saturday morning so I was not going to venture too far from the warmth of the fireplace. I did want to try to capture the stillness and depth of the extreme cold. This is the view out of the window in front of my computer. This is an HDR to try to bring out starkness of the cold against the warmth of the trees and remaining leaves.

February 6, SP of my "ride of a lifetime" abord Andy Anderson's BAC 167 Strikemaster at the Prairie Air Show. I have had the wonderful opportunity to fly in a variety of aircraft including hot air balloons, gliders, open air cockpit vintage bi-planes but this was my first jet fighter. It was incredible.

January 27, A shot of downtown Chicago from this past summer

January 29, Another shot from my shoot last evening. The temperature was 11 Degrees and I quickly learned that 11 degrees at night is colder than 11 degrees during the day...for some reason. This image is from a waterfront park along the Illinois River. I have been waiting for the river to freeze over for some shots of river ice but up to this point it has been too warm to freeze solid. That may change over the last few days. The camera performed well in the cold...can't say the same for the photographer.

January 18th, Woke up yesterday and everything was blanketed in a layer of frozen fog...lots of beautiful ice crystals covering most everything. This was one of my favorite captures.

January 25, Another perspective on my favorite barn.

February 5th, This is Connor again. he is our youngest Golden. At 125lbs he is a big bundle of fun and energy. Fetching is his 2nd favorite past time second only to getting wet which I featured in last month's dailies.

February 4, Thank you all for the comments on my last several posts...to answer some of the questions on the rider yesterday, he did not even fall of and both the horse and rider were fine. Today's post is inside Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui. My daughter and I took an equestrian excursion down into the volcano crater. I have been there several times and never seen it this clear. Normally, the clouds surround the entire area as the crater is so high. You can see the clouds below the rim in the distance. Best viewed very large.

January 30, Finally had a beautiful clear day. It was also a little warmer than it has been. This is one of my favorite buildings in Peoria. It reflects the sky from almost every angle

February 8th, A wonderful festival each year is "Feast of the Hunter's Moon" in West Lafayette, Indiana draws hundreds of period players and talented artisans. There are many Black Smiths turning out beautiful pieces.

Your Bio

An amateur photographer, I have had a 27 year career in video production and broadcast television management. Living in deep South Texas for a number of years, I developed my interest in nature and aviation photography. With my kids now off to college I have been able to devote more time to my photography and add to my equipment.

Older work was all shot with a Canon Rebel XT and a 75-300mm zoom and I have recently added a Canon XSI and a Sigma 50-500mm zoom. New lens additions include a Sigma 10-20mm and a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC.
